Specifications

Rogerley Mine, near Frosterley, Weardale Mining District, Northern Pennines, County Durham, England, UK
56mm x 54mm x 38mm
Miniature
This piece consists of transparent glassy green cubic fluorite crystals to 10 mm atop a gray limestone matrix, which is also covered with drusy transparent light green cubic fluorites averaging 10 – 20 mm across. Also present are a large number of gray rounded octahedral galena crystals to 0.5 cm across; most average 0.2 cm across. As is characteristic of fluorites from this mine, most crystals are penetration twins, and exhibit a bright-blue daylight fluorescence when viewed in direct sunlight. These are also fluorescent bright blue under shortwave, midwave and longwave UV light (see photos above). Other than edge contacting, relatively damage-free, save for a couple of minor nicks which do not detract from the beauty of this specimen. See Rocks and Minerals, Volume 75, Number 1 (2000), pages 54-61 for an excellent article about mining activities at this site.
