This is a nice representative specimen of agatized coral from the famed Ballast Point area within the City of Tampa. The specimen consists of translucent tea-colored chalcedony, with a drusy quartz interior mostly overcoated with white common opal. The fossil details of the coral are evident on the outside of the pieces, as seen in the accompanying photo. Fluorescent (and slightly phosphorescent) yellow under longwave, midwave and shortwave UV light. Collected in 1971 from the dug-up back yard of Carl Anderson. This area is now built over with exclusive residences, and it is very unlikely that additional excavations will occur here. Collected from the Tampa Member of the Arcadia Formation, Hawthorn Group (lower Miocene). Individual dimensions are: (79 x 49 x 20 mm & 69 x 45 x 20 mm).
